ارْتَحَلَتِ الدُّنْيَا مُدْبِرَةً، وَارْتَحَلَتِ الْآخِرَةُ مُقْبِلَةً
“The world is moving away, and the hereafter is moving toward you. Each of them has children — so be among the children of the hereafter, not the children of the world. Today is action without reckoning. Tomorrow will be reckoning without action.”
Ali ibn Abi Talib
Fourth Caliph, Cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet ﷺ
Ali ibn Abi Talib was known for the depth of his wisdom on the relationship between dunya and akhirah. This saying captures a truth that most people intellectually accept but live as if they have rejected: the dunya is in constant departure. Every day that passes is a day less of this world and a day closer to the next. The question is not whether you know this — it is which world you are building your life for.
Which world have your decisions this week been building for? Be honest — not the answer you wish were true.
Before any major decision today, ask: is this choice building my dunya or my akhirah? Not both — be honest about which one is really driving it.
“Today is action without reckoning. Tomorrow is reckoning without action. Choose which side of that line you are on.”
