لَيْسَ الشَّدِيدُ بِالصُّرَعَةِ، إِنَّمَا الشَّدِيدُ الَّذِي يَمْلِكُ نَفْسَهُ عِنْدَ الْغَضَبِ
“The strong person is not the one who can overpower others in wrestling. The strong person is the one who controls himself when angry.”
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Messenger of Allah
Recorded in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. The Companions had a natural understanding of strength as physical — the wrestler, the warrior. The Prophet ﷺ inverted their definition. The rarest and most difficult strength, he said, is not over another body — it is over your own self, at the moment when self-control costs the most.
Think of the last time you were genuinely angry. What did your strength look like in that moment? What would true strength have looked like?
The next time you feel anger rising today, pause for three breaths before responding. That pause is the practice.
“The strongest person is not the wrestler. It is the one who holds himself at the moment of rage.”
