Quran 21:51-70; Tafsir Ibn Kathir
Ibrahim and the Fire
When Allah made the fire cool
Ibrahim ﷺ had grown up in a land of idol worship. His own father was a maker of idols. From childhood, his mind asked questions that no one around him would answer: How does a stone have power? How does something I can pick up and carry be worthy of worship?
He watched the sun rise and said, "This is my Lord." Then it set. He said, "I do not love what sets."
He watched the moon. Then the stars. Each time — they rose and set. Each time he concluded: none of these can be Lord.
When he came to his people with the truth, they refused. He went to their temple and broke every idol — leaving only the largest one standing, with the axe hung around its neck.
When they accused him, he said: "Ask the big one — he has the axe."
They said: "You know it cannot speak."
He said: "Then why do you worship what cannot speak, hear, help, or harm you?"
They could not answer. But instead of opening their hearts, they hardened them. They decided to burn him alive.
They built a fire so large that birds could not fly over it without dying from the heat. They placed Ibrahim ﷺ in a catapult and launched him into the flames.
At that moment, the Angel Jibreel came to him and asked: "Do you need anything?"
Ibrahim ﷺ said: "Not from you."
He surrendered to Allah alone.
Then Allah said: "O fire — be cool and safe for Ibrahim."
He emerged unharmed. The fire, which had been built to destroy him, had become his shelter.
His answer to Jibreel is one of the most profound statements of Tawakkul ever spoken. He was mid-air, launched into a fire that killed birds at a distance. And he said: 'Not from you.' Not rejection of Jibreel — but pure, total surrender to Allah. He wanted nothing except from the One who had sent him into the world in the first place. And Allah answered by changing the nature of fire itself.
If you were mid-air heading toward the fire — who would you turn to? Who would you be tempted to turn to first?
Identify the situation in your life that feels most like a fire. Surrender it to Allah today — completely.
“Jibreel asked: do you need anything? Ibrahim said: not from you. Then Allah spoke to the fire.”
