Uwais al-Qarni

The greatest of the Tabi'in — whom the Prophet ﷺ knew without meeting

The Prophet ﷺ once said to his Companions: "Among the Tabi'in — those who come after you — the best is a man named Uwais al-Qarni."

He said: "He has a white spot of leprosy on his body, which will have healed except for a dirham-sized mark. He has a mother whom he honors completely. If he were to make an oath by Allah, Allah would fulfill it. If any of you meet him, ask him to make du'a for your forgiveness."

Uwais lived in Yemen. He had accepted Islam — he believed in the Prophet ﷺ with his whole heart — but he had never met him. He desperately wanted to make the journey to Madinah to see him. But his mother was elderly and ill, and he could not leave her.

When the Prophet ﷺ passed away, Uwais was still in Yemen. He had spent his life in complete obscurity — poor, unknown, caring for his mother. Most people barely knew his name.

After the Prophet's ﷺ death, Umar ibn al-Khattab and Ali ibn Abi Talib — two of the greatest Companions — made it their mission to find Uwais. When they finally found him — a plain, unimpressive-looking man — they asked him to make du'a for them.

He said: "I am a sinner. How can I make du'a for you?"

But they insisted. He prayed for them.

And they honored him as the greatest of the generation that came after the Companions.

Uwais never gave a single lecture. He wrote no books. He had no followers. He was simply obedient — to Allah and to his mother. The Prophet ﷺ described him by his faithfulness and his white spot and his mother, not by his brilliance or influence. The greatest status in the next generation was held by someone no one had heard of. Sincerity in obscurity is its own rank.

What are you doing in private that no one sees — for Allah and for those in your care? That is what is being written.
