The Woman and the Dog
Paradise through a cup of water
The Prophet ﷺ told his Companions of a woman — a prostitute — from the Children of Israel.
One day she passed by a well and saw a dog panting with thirst, so close to death that it was eating the dirt around the well.
She had compassion on it.
She took off her leather sock, lowered it into the well, drew up water, and gave the dog to drink.
The Prophet ﷺ said: Allah forgave her for that act.
The Companions asked: "Will we be rewarded for kindness to animals?"
The Prophet ﷺ said: "In every living creature there is a reward."
Her entire history — her profession, her past — was not what Allah weighed. What He weighed was one moment of mercy toward a creature that could not thank her, could not repay her, and had nothing to offer her. One leather sock. One cup of water. Forgiveness for a life. This story is about the weight of a single act done with a clean heart.
When did you last show mercy to something that could give you nothing in return — no status, no gratitude, no social benefit? That is where Allah is watching.
Show kindness today to something or someone who cannot repay you. Do it quietly.
“She gave a dying dog water with her sock. Allah forgave her. One moment of mercy is heavier than a lifetime of sin.”
