◈ Verse

Al-Imran · 3:173

وَقَالُوا حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

And they said: Sufficient for us is Allah, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.

'Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakeel' — this phrase was said by the Prophet Ibrahim ﷺ when he was thrown into the fire. And it was said again by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his Companions when told that an army had gathered against them and they should fear. In both cases, what followed was not destruction — it was rescue. Allah responded to the fire with coolness. Allah responded to the army with their enemy's retreat. The scholars said: this phrase, said with true conviction, guarantees that Allah takes over the affair.

The verse refers to the Battle of Uhud aftermath, when the believers — some still wounded — were warned that Abu Sufyan had gathered a large army to finish them. Rather than collapse in fear, the Companions said this phrase and marched forward. The enemy turned back without engaging.

What situation in your life are you trying to handle yourself that you need to say Hasbunallah over — and mean it?

“This phrase was said into fire and into armies. In both cases, Allah answered.”
