عِلْم

Ilm

Il-m

Knowledge — the first command revealed, and the highest honor after prophethood.

The first word of revelation was Iqra — Read. Islam began with the command to learn. Ilm is so honored in the tradition that the Prophet ﷺ said the ink of the scholar is more sacred than the blood of the martyr. But Ilm without action is like a tree without fruit. The scholars said: the purpose of Ilm is Amal — righteous action. Knowledge that does not change behavior is merely information.

"Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees." — Quran 58:11

"Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim." — Ibn Majah
