حَيَاء
Haya
Ha-yaa
Modesty — a God-gifted restraint that protects the soul.
Haya is often translated as shyness or modesty, but it is deeper than both. It is an inner sensitivity — a dignified restraint from what dishonors Allah, oneself, or others. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Every religion has a character, and the character of Islam is Haya.' Haya is not weakness or timidity. It is the self-respect of someone who knows their worth before Allah.
"Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts." — Quran 24:30
"Haya does not bring anything except good." — Sahih Bukhari
Where have you allowed your environment to erode your sense of Haya?
Lower your gaze once today when you normally would not. Notice what shifts inside.
